Benmar Bakes Up a Treat

This summer saw the launch of The Great Benmar Bake Off at Benmar House, home of MS Research and Relief Fund. The competition saw service users, staff, friends, family and members of the public enter bakes into the competition – all for a shot at the Grand Final and a chance at being crowned 2017’s Great Benmar Bake Off Champion. The event took place over six weeks, with five weekly categories – scones, breads, cakes, biscuits and pastries, followed by the Grand Final on 29th August 2017. The winner of each weekly category went forwards to the final and the chance to bake for the guest judges. The finallists were:
  • Steven Dodds – partner of a service user
  • Lucy Holloway – owner of local business Gabella Aesthetics
  • Hollie Ellis – partner of a service user and volunteer graphic designer
  • Deborah Davidson – MSRRF Fitness and Therapies Team Leader
  • Jean Farham – Personal Support Worker
MSRRF were fortunate to acquire three guest judges for the final, Martin and Alex – the manager and head pastry chef from the Parlour, Blagdon and John Benyon from Morpeth Town Council and Morpeth’s Chamber of Trade and Town team. The competition was tight but Steven Dodds came out on top to take the title of 2017’s Great Benmar Bake Off Champion. His signature cheese scones were described as some of the best the judges had ever tasted. With a total of 77 bakes entered into the competition, the event raised a phenomenal £1,210 towards helping people affected by Multiple Sclerosis in the North East and across the UK. The Grand Final was covered by Morpeth News TV and their video report featured interviews with MSRRF’s Fundraising Manager Dan Nelson, guest judge Alex Jarvis and the champion himself, Steven Dodds.
